Red carpet and awards season officially kicked off last night. The first awards show of the new year, the 75th Golden Globes, happened last evening and there were a few things that ignited so many things inside me. And guess what…they didn’t have much to do with fashion.
THE BLACKOUT
Seeing all of the actresses stand in solidarity and declare with their dresses (and voices) #TimesUp was amazing to witness. And let me tell you, these ladies and their black dresses DID NOT come to play! See Issa Rae. See Kendall Jenner. See Ms. Oprah. See Zoë Kravitz. See Catherine Zeta Jones. See Tracee Ellis Ross (I would’ve loved to see her natural curls). See Yvonne Orji and June Ambrose, too! There was a host of others, and the slayage was REAL! Side note: Kerry Washington’s look was cool from the ankle up. According to Q, those boots were just all wrong.
VIOLA’S AFRO
In a red carpet world where natural hair of this magnitude is usually tucked away, Mrs. Davis’ ‘fro stole the show. Her look was a simple on trend velvet dress that gave her tresses a lovely base to display a beautiful halo. Angelic it was.
STERLING K. BROWN
Mr. Brown won the Best Actor in a Drama award for This is Us!! I’ve watched since day one, and I couldn’t have been happier! It’s like my big brother or Uncle won! I was THAT excited. ‘This is Us’ is an amazing show, and if you’ve watched then you know he (& the entire cast) reach to the depth of our souls EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK. This award is well-deserved and was his for the taking! Go Sterling!!
OPRAH!!!!
She just exudes excellence, and last night at the Golden Globes was no exception. She received the Cecil B. DeMille award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”. Her speech was outstanding, heavy, and full of girl power and quotables to make us get and stay all the way together!
“What I know for sure, is speaking your truth is most powerful tool we all have.”
“For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up!”
“So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”
Mic drop. When Queen Oprah speaks, we listen!! Thank you Ms. Winfrey for the many nuggets and pearls of wisdom that empower us to be our best selves and live our best life! The Golden Globes have set the tone for awards season in the most fabulous way! I’m looking forward t more great red carpets!
