Waist Beads have increased in popularity over the last few years, but can be traced back to the Motherland for centuries. They have evolved from using primitive materials (bone, stone, teeth, etc.) to both glass and ceramic beads and gemstones. So why would anyone wear these?? Waist beads have a deep history with many meanings including beauty, healing, and femininity. In some African tribes, the wearing of waist beads was a rite of passage into woman hood. Mothers would adorn their daughters with waist beads during their first menstruation. They were even used to lure lovers, provoke intimacy, and spice things up in the bedroom! Girl. Who’s ready to get some waist beads in your life?? Even the colors have different meanings (see them HERE).
I’ve been wearing waist beads for about two months, but I’ve been interested in them for a few years. I wanted to use them to help me track fat and weight loss without stepping on a scale all of the time. I lift weights quite a bit so my numbers don’t really move much. It wasn’t until I started following Cris Cavallari on Instagram that I decided to take the plunge. She made them look super cool and sexy, and I’ve been loving them so far. Not only are my beads dropping (the sign that my foopa is disappearing), but I feel super feminine and sexy. I went with a neutral and red color palette to start, but I’m definitely about to add more color.
For reference, I started with the bottom strand. I wore it alone for a couple of weeks to see how I would feel. It didn’t show under clothes and I barely knew it was there. I added the other 3 strands about 2 weeks later. My beads are all single strand, but there are some that come in double or triple strands. Also, once they’re tied on, you cannot remove them unless they are cut off. I do have 1 strand (the red one) that had a toggle that I can take off if I want. I always start the beads at my natural waist (right at the belly button), and as you can see, your girl is out here getting fine fine. *hits a hair flip* I have actually weighed myself and I’m down about 5 pounds since May 1. But it’s not magic, hunny! I’m a part-time vegetarian (weekdays) and I’ve been working out like a mad woman 3-4x a week, including a jump rope challenge I started with a group of ladies for June.
